Art is my Therapy

Art has always been more than a hobby for me. It’s more than colour on canvas, more than patterns, more than the quiet hours spent painting while the world moves around me. Art is my therapy, the place where my nervous system settles, my thoughts organize themselves, and my emotions finally have somewhere to go.

I’m an emerging visual artist based in Barrie, working in dimensional abstract art, spiritual pieces, and mandala‑inspired designs. My work is rooted in emotional regulation, intuitive movement, and the quiet discipline of creating beauty through structure. I paint to explore the relationship between grounding and expression — how colour, symmetry, and texture can stabilize the nervous system while still allowing creativity to flow freely.

For me, art is not an escape from life. It’s how I process life.

When I sit down to paint, something shifts. My breathing slows. My thoughts stop racing. My body stops bracing. The world becomes quieter, softer, more manageable. The act of painting becomes a conversation between my mind and my emotions — a way of translating what I feel into something I can see, touch, and understand.

My artistic process is deeply connected to healing. I work in parallel, often developing multiple pieces at once, allowing each canvas to evolve at its own pace. This intuitive multitasking reflects the way I navigate life: adaptive, layered, and guided by energy rather than rigidity. Some pieces move quickly, others take weeks. Some demand bold colours, others whisper for subtlety. I don’t force anything; I let the art tell me what it needs.

This is therapy for me because it mirrors emotional healing. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is linear. Nothing is perfect. Everything is allowed to unfold.

Art has helped me regulate my emotions in ways I didn’t expect. When I paint mandalas, the symmetry calms me. When I work with texture, the tactile grounding brings me back into my body. When I paint spiritual or cosmic pieces, I feel connected to something bigger, something that reminds me that healing isn’t just internal, it’s universal.

There’s an art discipline that people don’t always see. Creativity isn’t chaos; it’s structure, patience, and intention. Every line, every colour, every layer is a choice. And those choices teach me how to make better choices in my life, how to slow down, how to listen, how to trust my intuition, how to let things evolve instead of forcing them.

Art has also given me resilience. When a piece doesn’t turn out the way I imagined, I don’t throw it away. I work with it. I adapt. I find a new direction. That mindset has carried into every part of my life, school, work, relationships, and personal growth. Art teaches me that mistakes aren’t failures; they’re texture.

Being an artist has shaped how I move through the world. It’s taught me to see beauty in small details, to find meaning in patterns, to appreciate the quiet moments where inspiration arrives without warning. It’s taught me that healing doesn’t always look like rest; sometimes it looks like creation.

Art is my therapy because it gives me a place to be fully myself. No masks. No pressure. No expectations. Just colour, movement, and honesty.

And as I continue building Lasirenesea Artistry, I’m learning that my art isn’t just healing for me; it resonates with others, too. People connect with the emotion in my pieces, the grounding in the symmetry, the energy in the colours. They see themselves in the work, and that connection is one of the most meaningful parts of being an artist.

Art has helped me grow, stabilize, and understand myself. It’s helped me navigate stress, find clarity, and stay grounded through change. It’s helped me build discipline, confidence, and purpose.

Art is my therapy, and it’s also my future.

Thank you, Sarah Retiffe
